Project Engineer
While Mike was Maintenance Manager, he went to Penn State during the evenings to get his BS in Electrical Engineering, which Godiva paid for through their tuition aid program. He also worked on some projects and got a taste for the engineering side, and he felt that was something he would prefer to do.

Maintenance Manager
Mike requested this promotion, and his manager felt he was ready for the responsibility.
Maintenance Supervisor
Mike says he got this promotion by being “in the right place at the right time,” and his supervisor felt that he was a good fit for the position.

What qualities does it take for someone to be successful at Godiva?
It’s a matter of meeting your commitments. If you say you’re going to do something, you’ve got to follow through and make sure it gets done. Also, you have to have a person to champion you, someone who’s going to recognize you’re doing a good job and speak up for you.

What’s the work culture like at Godiva?
At the plant, it’s a friendly, clean, temperature-controlled, very nice environment to work in. For the most part, it’s a relaxed environment. There’s not a lot of pressure except during the busy season. If people speak up and have a concern, those concerns are addressed. Management is very good at listening to people’s concerns.

How does working at Godiva compare to your previous work experiences?
I’ve worked in two other manufacturing facilities, and I’d have to say this place is definitely heads above those other two as far as people cooperating with each other and trying to help each other out.

What do you do in your current position to help achieve Godiva’s “Gold Standard of customer service”?
Our customer would be the operations people (the people making the candy). We ask them: What exactly do you want? What’s the end result you want to see? We take that input and do our best to satisfy their needs.

How does Godiva show it cares for its employees?
By giving us the opportunities to do things that we like to do and try different things. Anytime I ever wanted to do something to better myself – through education or whatever – they always gave me that opportunity. I don’t remember them ever saying, "No, we’re not going to support that."

What’s the most challenging thing about working at Godiva?
Getting through the approval process to obtain new equipment.

What’s the best thing about working at Godiva?
The opportunities.
