My Favorite Godiva Chocolate:
The Dessert Chocolat
The Godiva chocolate that best represents my personality:
Open Oyster: “It’s our #1 piece. It’s the ultimate indulgence. It has this commanding presence. That is the attitude I take when I’m working in the department stores, even though we’re only a small piece of their business.” |

What qualities does it take for someone to be successful at Godiva?
I’m very competitive, very driven, very aggressive in sales. That personality trait allowed me to win in the environment I was in – going in to a store trying to sell something. I’m very passionate about what I do. Also, my direct supervisor pushed me and developed me. Whatever my weakness was, she challenged me to develop that into a strength. She made my accomplishments known to the right people.
|
What's the work culture like at Godiva?
It’s like a family to me. It’s a very supportive team environment. People respect one another both personally and professionally. When I hire part-time people, they always say the same thing: it seems like the company cares about them.
|
How does working at Godiva compare to your previous work experiences?
At cosmetic companies, you just don’t mix with senior management. They treat you poorly. They’re condescending. Godiva is totally the opposite of that. It doesn’t seem like Corporate America. You can change things. People do listen.
|
What do you do in your current position to help achieve Godiva’s "Gold Standard of customer service"?
Because our mission is to be the world’s premier chocolatier, I try to represent the company that way whenever I’m in any business situation – talking on the phone, meeting people in person, interviewing people, sending e-mail. I am a direct representation of Godiva, so I need to be a Gold Standard. Also, my position allows me to hire other people who are representing the company. I try to hire the best, most professional people I can so that they can deliver that Gold Standard of customer service.
|
How does Godiva show it cares for its employees?
Management listens. Because it’s a small company, you feel like you’re making a difference. If you have an idea and you speak up – even if you’re a part-time person – they actually listen to you. The account coordinators can have a conversation with the president of North America, and he’ll treat them no differently than he would treat a Senior VP. You’re treated like a human being. You get instant respect from the management team. You feel like you’re all working toward a common cause.
|
What’s the most challenging thing about working at Godiva?
Most of us in wholesale sales don’t work in the same cities, so we’re out there by ourselves. It’s challenging to be out there on your own, only getting together with the whole team twice a year.
|
What’s the best thing about working at Godiva?
The people.
